• After Effects CC 2017 introduces the new Cinema 4D renderer natively in After Effects, allowing you to create 3D extruded text and shape layers, without needing to leave After Effects. This new feature replaces the legacy ray-traced renderer, utilizing Cinema 4D to render 3D elements under the hood.

Jan 15, 2014 Select the C4D file in your After Effects project and hit Ctl+E (Cmd+E on Mac). It’s just that easy. You can also go through the Edit menu and select “Edit original”. Cinema 4D is the 3D application of choice for motion graphics artists. The tight integration with After Effects is a result of that. It’s time for the Cinema 4D R23 Compatibility List! Indeed, we are excited about the release of Cinema 4D R23 with its enhancements to Animation, Character and UV Workflows, Magic Bullet Looks Integration, and more. As with any new release, compatibility can be an issue.

When working with Cinema 4D files that use the external compositing tag within After Effects CC 2014, non-linear animation created with Spline type keyframes does not match the timing displayed inside Cinema 4D.

If you are still having difficulties, you can try these two workarounds. If these workarounds do not help, please contact support for further troubleshooting.

Use After Effects 12.2 (CC) to extract the compositing information from
the C4D file, then open that saved project file inside of After Effects
CC 2014.

This solution requires that you have a full retail version of Cinema 4D r14 or r15.

To prepare, you must install the C4DImporter plugin available from Maxon. To get this plugin, go to this page http://www.maxon.net/en/support/updates/plugins.html. On that page, click on the link that reads “Plugins for After Effects CC <> CINEMA 4D R14/R15 connection.'

The plugin should be installed in the main After Effects plugin directory or under plugins/Maxon Cineware AE

Make sure Save is checked and click the Save subgroup.


Click File… and put in a filename and location to store a workaround file


Under Compositing Project File, make sure Save is checked.


Make sure Target Application is set to After Effects


Inside After Effects, Import the AEC project file.

This will create two folders, a Solids folder and a Folder named for the File name you selected in step 6.


Open the Folder name you chose in Step 6, and open the composition.


Copy any Solids or Nulls from this composition into your main composition.

One of the coolest things about upgrading to Adobe CC is the integration of Cinema 4D Lite with After Effects. This is the first time Adobe users have been able to use a true 3D application inside AE.

I have been thoroughly enjoying learning the C4D interface via tutorials on the Greyscale Gorilla website, but ran into a problem when trying to reopen the C4D project files the following day. I just couldn’t figure it out!

After much searching, I found the trick – and so I thought I’d post it here so maybe the next person will have an easier time answering this question. Are you ready for it? Here it is:
